International Men’s Day: Celebrating Men, Their Roles and Responsibilities

International Men’s Day, observed on November 19th every year, is a global occasion dedicated to recognizing and appreciating the contributions of men in various spheres of life. While often overshadowed by other observances, this day holds deep importance as it focuses on promoting positive role models, highlighting men’s well-being and encouraging gender balance in society.

The idea of dedicating a day to men was first proposed in the 1960s, but it formally took shape in 1999 in Trinidad and Tobago, under the initiative of Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh, a lecturer of history. He chose November 19th to honour his father’s birthday and to highlight men who contribute positively to their communities and families. Over time, the day gained recognition across countries, including India, where it is increasingly being observed to bring attention to men’s health, values and contributions.

The purpose of International Men’s Day goes beyond simply honouring men; it aims to address issues that affect them and to build a more balanced society. The day is celebrated to:
• Recognize the positive role models men provide in families, workplaces and communities
• Raise awareness about men’s health, both physical and mental, which is often overlooked
• Promote gender equality, by encouraging harmony rather than competition between men and women
• Highlight the responsibilities of men in nurturing families, guiding children and contributing to social well-being

It is also a reminder that while men play strong and supportive roles in society, they too face pressures, stereotypes and challenges that need acknowledgment and empathy.

International Men’s Day is marked in various ways across the world:
• Educational activities, seminars and workshops are organized to discuss men’s health, gender roles and positive masculinity
• Community events celebrate men who have made significant contributions in fields such as education, healthcare, business and public service
• Families and organizations often use the day to express appreciation for fathers, brothers, colleagues and mentors
• Social media campaigns spread awareness about men’s rights, responsibilities and the need to create a balanced environment where both men and women thrive equally

In India too, conversations around men’s mental health, work-life balance and their role in shaping the next generation are gaining importance during this day.

Men, like women, form the backbone of families and communities. They take on multiple roles – as fathers, brothers, partners, leaders and mentors. Appreciating them on this day reinforces the importance of balance and gratitude in relationships. When men are supported, valued and encouraged to lead healthier, happier lives, the entire society benefits.

At the same time, International Men’s Day is a reminder to break stereotypes – to allow men to be vulnerable, to seek help when needed and to embrace kindness alongside strength.

Empowering men with compassion and understanding creates a more inclusive and harmonious future.

International Men’s Day is not just about celebrating men, but about recognizing their contributions, addressing their challenges and building a world where everyone – regardless of gender – can live with dignity, health and opportunity. It is a day to appreciate the men in our lives and to encourage them to continue shaping society with integrity, courage and compassion.

By honouring men, we honour balance, partnership and progress – values that are essential for the growth of families, communities and nations.
